Summary
The contents of dry matter, water, fat, nitrogen and ash were determined in altogether 141 female and male Ascaris suum obtained at the local slaughter house. Additionally, the levels of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Se were determined by atomic absorptionspectralphotometry and of P and Cl by other techniques. The same parameters were also determined in Ascaris suum recovered from piglets on a normal diet (group I), a diet deficient (group II), rich (group III) or very rich in minerals (group IV). The following results were obtained:
-
1.
The pH of the perienteric fluid varied only slightly from 6.7 to 7.09.
-
2.
Male reproductive organs of ascarids from pigs on a normal diet contain considerably more Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn and less P than female reproductive organs.
-
3.
Feeding pigs on a diet deficient of minerals for 8 days results in a pronounced decrease of Fe in all organs and in a considerable decrease in Zn especially in male and in Cu and P in female worms. Na, K, Ca, Mg and P decrease particularly in the alimentary tract and to a lesser degree in the body wall in both sexes (group II).
-
4.
Feeding minerals at a high level for 8 days results in an increase of minerals in the worms which, however, is only equivalent to 10% of the increase of minerals in the food. K in the alimentary tract, Zn in the reproductive system of both sexes and Cu and Fe in the male reproductive organs increase obviously (group III).
-
5.
Increasing the mineral supply of pigs for another 100% for further 11 days the mineral level of ascarids increases only marginally. Only the alimentary tract and the body wall contain elevated levels (group IV).
