Investigation on the bionomics of Ornithodoros zumpti Heisch et Guggisberg (Ixodoidea: Argasidae)

Summary

These investigations into the bionomics of Ornithodoros zumpti have shown that:

• 1. The tick Ornithodoros zumpti seems to thrive best under laboratory conditions of darkness with a relative humidity of 77–82% at temperatures between 68–75°F (20°–24°C).

• 2. The time which elapsed from fertilisation of the female to the commencement of laying was on the average 9 weeks.

• 3. The average period from the commencement of laying to the first hatchings was 21 days.

• 4. The average period from hatching to the adult stage was 89 days.

• 5. The complete life cycle, from fertilisation to the adult stage occupied on the average 181 days.

• 6. Throughout their development the ticks did not remain attached to the host except for the brief duration of each feed. This was true also of the larva.

• 7. The life cycle is comprised of egg, one larval stage, generally three nymphal stages and the adult stage, with the ticks generally feeding once during each stage.

1. Die Zecke Ornithodoros zumpti läßt sich offenbar am besten unter Laboratoriumsbedingungen bei Dunkelheit und einer relativen Luftfeuchtigkeit von 77–82%, bei Temperaturen von 20–24°C halten.

2. Im Durchschnitt vergehen zwischen Befruchtung des Weibchens und der Eiablage 9 Wochen.

3. Im Durchschnitt schlüpfen die Larven nach 21 Tagen.

4. Die Entwicklung bis zum erwachsenen Stadium dauert durchschnittlich 89 Tage.

5. Der vollständige Entwicklungszyklus von der Befruchtung bis zum erwachsenen Stadium dauert etwa 181 Tage.

6. Die Zecken bleiben während ihrer Entwicklung nicht bei ihrem Wirt, sondern suchen ihn nur kurze Zeit zu jeder Nahrungsaufnahme auf; das trifft auch für die Larven zu.

7. Der Lebenszyklus umfaßt Ei, ein Larvenstadium, im allgemeinen drei Nymphenstadien und das adulte Stadium, wobei die Zecken im allgemeinen auf jedem Stadium einmal Blut saugen.
