Abstract
Chromosome pairing was compared in two hybrids between A. sativa cv. Sun II and two genotypes of A. longiglumis Cw 57 and Cc 4851. More chromosomes were involved in chiasmate associations at metaphase 1 in the Cw 57 than the Cc 4851 hybrid. The extent of chromosome pairing recorded in the hybrids obtained by crossing the Cw 57xCc 4851 diploid hybrid and A. sativa showed that the variation between the two A. longiglumis accessions was genotypic, and was controlled by allelic differences at more than one locus. The effect of the Cw 57 in increasing the number of homoeologous chromosomes that paired was also apparent in the derived amphiploids. The Cw 57 genotype modifies the genetic system in A. sativa responsible for the control of diploid like pairing, resulting in the increased pairing of homoeologous chromosomes.
