Summary
Transurethral prostatectomy is one of the most frequently performed operations in the United States. To determine the current status of TUR-P, a national cooperative study was undertaken by the American Urological Association. While symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction was the most common single indication, multiple indications were found in over 70% of patients. A mortality rate of 0.2% was noted, as compared to the 2.5% found in 1961. The factors which influenced postoperative morbidity were identified, and included the size of the gland resected, operative time, acute urinary retention, and age.
