The course and distribution of glial fibres can be shown quite distinctly by fluorescence-microscopy of chromealum-hematoxyline-phloxine stained paraffin sections of brains, which had been fixed by perfusion with Bouin's fluid from the aorta. The same section can be used for light microscopy and for the demonstration of the glial fibres by fluorescence-microscopy. In contrast to the ordinary methods for the staining of glial fibres, which require sections of small blocks of specially treated material, the new technique can be employed for large serial sections of whole brains. Parallel sections from the same block of tissue can be treated in numerous different ways for comparison, since Bouin's fluid is a very convenient fixative for many histological purposes.

The study of the wall of the lateral and IIIrd ventricles, carried out in frontal sections of the cat's brain, reveals a special and characteristic structure of the ependyma as well as of the subependymal tissue layers in practically every region of the ventricular wall.

In those areas, where the ventricular wall is formed by white matter, there is a flat ependyma, and no distinct layer of subependymal glial fibres or astrocytes can by seen. On the other hand, the structure differs greatly between various regions of those parts of the ventricular wall, which are formed by grey matter. Some of these regions are characterised by high ependymal cells, by a thick layer of subependymal fibres and by a layer of subependymal astrocytes, whereas others are characterised by absence of the subependymal glia. In such regions the ventricular fluid is separated from the neuropil by a unicellular layer of ependyma only. The topography of these and other differences in the structure of the ventricular wall is described in detail.

The findings are discussed with regard to some electron-microscopic observations and with special regard to recent experiments on the active transport of substances such as histamine, bromophenol blue and acetazolamid from the cerebrospinal fluid into the brain tissue.
