Summary
The parenchymal cells typical for the organum vasculosum laminae terminalis are found within the internal zone; some of them form small groups. These cells possess axosomatic synapses and all the structural features of nervous elements. Within their nucleus rodlike bundles of tubules occur, which are supposed to play a role in the process of amitotic cell division. This is also assumed for the ependymal cells which contain even more bundles, often in pairs. Within some parenchymal cells the production of neurosecretory granules (average diameter ca. 1250 Å) is observed; the effective substances of them are released into the blood vessels of the vascular organ. Numerous parenchymal cells are vacuolated in an increasing degree: Small vacuoles originating from the cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum confluate to larger vacuoles. Finally the whole perikaryon is filled with this kind of secretory product; cell processes may be vacuolated as well. Some parenchymal cells have a dense cytoplasm. — The parenchymal cells possess a very thick main process which turns frequently into the ventrodorsal direction; thinner processes often change their direction abruptly. Together with neuronal processes coming from outside the organ, the processes of parenchymal and glial cells are forming the neuropil which contains numerous axo-dendritic synapses. Myelinated axons belong mainly to the retino-hypothalamic bundle passing the vascular organ; only part of them originates from parenchymal cells.
The ependymal cells, some of which have no contact to the 3rd ventricle, differ in shape. Only the extremely widened perivascular spaces are covered by groups of ependymal cells of regular cuboidal or flattened shape. All ependymal cells are devoid of cilia and microvilli. Often they show apical protrusions with many ribosomes; the ventricular plasmalemma is thickened. Some of the basal processes extend like tanycytes to blood vessels in the depth of the organ; others curve and participate in forming a glial felt. This glial felt is transversed by many very thin neuronal processes. Numerous ependymal cells contain dense granules with an average diameter of 0,3–0,6 μ; other ones contain many lysosomes. — Most of the glial cells in the interior of the organ are astrocytes; almost the whole external zone is formed by their processes. The processes have large contact areas to the blood vessels and the cisterna praechiasmatica. In the cytoplasm of some protoplasmic astrocytes numerous lysosomes and sometimes glycogen and gliosomes occur. The widened vascular endings of the filamentous astrocytes contain conspicuous whorls of tightly packed filaments. — Glial cells with numerous ribosomes and a dense nucleus cannot be ascribed to one of the conventional cell types; we call them “dense glial cells”. — Most of the parenchymal cells are surrounded by satellite cells. Between adjacent parenchymal cells the satellite cells are flattened to very thin sheaths. Occasionally several processes of parenchymal cells are embedded into the satellite cytoplasm without formation of mesaxon. — The oligodendrocytes producing myelin are very small.
The cytologic peculiarities of neuronal and glial cells as well as their relation to the blood system are discussed in detail.
