Summary

Seablue histiocytes were seen in the bone marrow and postmortem in the spleen of a patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Cytochemical and electron microscopic studies established the similarity of these cells to those found in adult Niemann-Pick disease. In comparison to normal spleen tissue the lipid analysis to this patient's spleen indicated a decrease mainly in the triglyceride fraction, whereas the sphingolipids showed a clear increase. The increase of gangliosides was five times, of cerebrosides was three fold, and that of sphingomyelin two fold.
