Summary
By means of electron microscopical investigation of the endocervical epithelium a transformation of ripe mucous granules into granulo-filamentary bodies could be frequently shown. These bodies are found in the cervical epithelium of fetus of at least 35 cm length as well as in the cervical epithelium of younger and old women. We have not yet been able to give a functional explanation of this transformation process. It has not been possible to correlate these electron microscopical findings with light microscopical ones. The granulofilamentary transformation of the mucous granules is obviously an irreversible process. Thus produced bodies remain in the cytoplasm of the cell when mucous is extruded.
