Summary
In Pacific salmons, thyroid activity is stimulated after iodine deficiency and TSH cells are more numerous than in animals fed a normal diet.
131I injections (100 μCi/month for 6 months) in young iodine deficient salmons (15–30 g) induce a subtotal radiothyroidectomy (90–95%) in 14 animals; it is complete in only 1 fish. The remnants, partly constituted by small follicles apparently in activity, synthesize small amounts of thyroxine (La Roche et al., 1966a) sufficient to maintain a normal growth, but unable to suppress TSH cell reactions (hypertrophy, hyperplasia, mitotic activity, degranulation and sometimes vacuolization) and their nuclear and nucleolar responses. These cells are localized in the antero-ventral zone of the pituitary gland, mainly in the rostral pars distalis and are distinct of the gonadotrophic cells still poorly differentiated at this stage; quite often, they are in contact with nervous tissue. The growth hormone secreting cells remain active.
A similar treatment in iodine deficient trouts induces a complete radiothyroidectomy. This different response between two closely related species might be due to the fact that thyroid volume is larger in salmon than in rainbow trout: although 131I iodine uptake is slightly higher in salmon, the thyroid secretion rate is increased and might be responsible for a less efficient destruction at the time when this experiment was performed.
