Summary
The epithelial ultrastructure of the intestine of normal and fasted medicinal leeches is characterized by the following features:
-
1.
The luminal surface of the high columnar cells is covered with microvilli of different shapes and sizes, while the abluminal plasmalemma forms a rather complex basal labyrinth. The intercellular clefts show a variety of attachment devices, but no discontinuities of the lateral cell membranes could be observed in the normal state.
-
2.
Due to the unequal distribution of the different organelles the cytoplasm shows a certain kind of stratification. Mitochondria occur in two different populations and the elaborate Golgi complexes contain electron-dense material within their cisternae.
-
3.
Vacuoles of different sizes, surrounded by a discontinuous membrane and filled with a granular material are scattered throughout the apical cytoplasm. The lipid inclusions are much less and smaller than those found in the diverticula; they are often surrounded by flat cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum.
-
4.
After six months of starvation a general loss of structural components can be observed, especially a reduction of ergastoplasm, Golgi complexes, and lipid inclusions. Moreover, numerous discontinuities of the lateral cell membranes occur and a variety of vacuoles of different sizes and contents can be found.
