Summary
The epithelial ultrastructure of the diverticula of normal and fasted leeches, Hirudo medicinalis, is characterized by the following features: 1. The low columnar cells normally contain large masses of lipid granules with irregular outlines and mitochondria closely applied to their surface. They store neutral fat which may be used as a source of energy during malnutrition.
2. The luminal surface of the epithelial cells is covered with typical microvilli while the abluminal plasmalemma forms a simple basal labyrinth. The lateral cell borders possess modified attachement devices and show in their deeper parts complete discontinuities whose number and dimensions are considerably augmented after fasting.
3. Another characteristic cellular component are vacuoles (“cockade corpuscles”) filled with concentrically layered material. A second variety of vacuoles are surrounded by a discontinuous membrane and especially numerous near the lumen. Their granular contents may serve for the substitution of the apical electron dense cytoplasm, because its loss in electron-opacity in the fasting animal is parallelled by a considerable decrease of these vacuoles.
4. Near the intensely folded nuclei a poorly developed Golgi complex and bundles of filaments can be found. The rather small mitochondria and the few, occasionally concentrically-stacked, rough-surfaced membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum are concentrated along the cell borders.
