Summary
The relative mucopolysaccharide concentration in contrast with protein content has been established indirectly by hexosamine determination after hydrolysis and by column-chromatographic separation in the cochlear sections of membranous labyrinth of the guinea-pig and the pig. The results were opposite from the examinations in pure muscles and connective tissues. The mucopolysaccharide content in the inner ear lies considerably higher than in the muscle and even more than in the connective tissues. The mucopolysaccharide thus appeared to be an important element of the membranous cochlea. Their possible significance for the construction and the function of the hearing organ are discussed.
