Summary
The influence of increased arterial carbon dioxide tension \({\text{(Pa}}_{{\text{co}}_{\text{2}} } = {\text{55 mm Hg)}}\) on blood flow as well as on glucose and oxygen uptake has been studied on 14 “tissue-isolated” tumors (DS-Carcinosarcoma) in rat kidneys.
Under hypercapnic conditions in arterial blood a decrease of tumor blood flow of about 30% and a simultaneous drop of oxygen and glucose uptake of the tumor tissue of 45 and 35% respectively occured.
Returning to normal arterial CO2 tensions all parameters reached the initial values within 25 min.
The drop of tumor blood flow in hypercapnia is refered to residual vascular response of the kidney vessels. The decrease of oxygen and glucose uptake is assumed to be caused by a change in tumor blood flow and in tumor metabolism.
