Summary

In the group of 76 guinea pigs the organ of Corti was examined by surface specimen technique to obtain the material for statistical evaluation of normal cellular pattern in the guinea pig and to determine the basic data for the characteristics of the control group. The deviations in the numbers of both inner hair cells and outer hair cells and the deviations in the position of cells were investigated.

In the group of 6 weeks old guinea pigs it was found, that the mean values of missing inner hair cells were 0.03% and of missing outer hair cells from 0.31 to 2.20% in relations to individual turns and rows.

The loss of hair cells depends on the age of the animal. In the group of 3 years old animals spontaneous pathological findings especially the loss of outer hair cells in the third turn were found.
