Summary
7-Hydroxymethyl-12-methylbenz(a)anthracene and 12-hydroxymethyl-7-methylbenz(a)anthracene were detected together with small amounts of 7,12-dihydroxy-methylbenz(a)anthracene and 8,9-dihydro-8,9-dihydroxy-7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene. When homogenates of the stomachs of mice that had been pretreated with 3-methylchol-anthrene were incubated with 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene, no significant increases in the amounts of the metabolites formed were found. There were increases in the amounts of the 8,9-dihydrodiol formed when homogenates of the small intestines of mice that had been similarly treated were incubated with the hydrocarbons. The levels of “aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase” were raised in homogenates of the small intestine of treated animals as compared with the levels of the enzyme in homogenates from normal animals.
