Summary
The sensory epithelium and the surrounding ciliated columnar epithelium of the organ of Jacobson in cats were studied by light and electron-microscopy. Support of the sensory epithelium is given by the sustentacular cells, their desmosomes and tonofilaments, as well as by the system of terminal bars and the terminal plate consisting of very fine filaments and stretched between the bars. At the base of the epithelium, dark basal cells provide the connection between the epithelium and the lamina propria. Below the upper third of the epithelium, a region free of nuclei, the region of the sustentacular-cell nuclei form a row. Only a few organelles are found throughout the cytoplasm of the sustentacular cells. There are numerous microvilli on their surfaces. At the base of the epithelium, the dark basal cells form sheaths around the sensory-cell axons and arrange them in bundles, a function finally taken over by the Schwann cells of the nervus vomero-nasalis that lies in the lamina propria. The structure of nucleus and perikaryon of the sensory cells is unspecific and resembles that of other neurocytes, for example, that of the sensory cells in the olfactory region. Each sensory cell sends a dendrite containing numerous neurotubuli to the epithelial surface, where it bears a tuft of about 200 sensory hairs, each of them about 4 μ in length. The sensory border lying on the surface of the epithelium is about 4 μ wide and is formed by the microvilli of the sustentacular cells, the hairs of the sensory cells, and a fluid material, secreted by the glands of the organ of Jacobson. In the vomero-nasal nerve, the axons are surrounded by thin mesaxons of the Schwann-cells and are tightly packed in bondles of varying thickness without interposition of an isolating substance. The surrounding cilitated columnar epithelium is composed of ordinary ciliated cells and intercalated bright columnar cells that posses a strikingly looking specific endoplasmic reticulum.
