Development of the visual cortex of rats treated with 6-hydroxydopamine in early life

Summary

The development of the visual cortex was examined in control rats and in littermates whose cortical noradrenergic innervation was removed with 6-hydroxydopamine. Qualitative and quantitative observations revealed no differences in the lamination, cytoarchitecture, cell density and size between the two groups of animals. These results suggest that the number, size, and distribution of cortical neurons are not significantly altered in the absence of noradrenergic afferents.
