Summary
-
1.
The construction of the tarsal scolopidial organ (TSO) in Notonecta was investigated by means of electron microscopy, semi-thin-section technique, and electrophysiological localization of receptor cells to complete and add to the information given by earlier descriptions (Debaisieux, 1938; Wiese, 1972).
-
2.
In contradiction to former observations, the TSO was found to consist of only 8 cells, 3 phasic-tonic receptor elements in a proximal, and 5 pure phasic cells located in a distal scoloparium.
-
3.
The proximal group of cell bodies remains anchored in place, while the somata of the distal scoloparium change position with their point of attachment on the epidermis envelope of the claw-tendon, depending on the position of the claw hinge at the time.
-
4.
The 2 cap cells of the proximal scoloparium insert at exactly the same place on the epidermis envelope as does the ligament anchoring the somata of the distal scoloparium. One cap cell of this distal group extends to the lumen of the larger, posterior claw and 2 other cap cells lead to the smaller anterior claw. The first point of their distal attachment was found to be distal to the hinge angulation.
-
5.
The anchoring of the distal scoloparium on a moved part of the claw-hinge mechanism enlarges the effective range of this receptor part and reverses the direction of the stimulus-effective movements.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
