Summary
Parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands were removed from rats and investigated histochemically. Pyruvate oxidase, iso-citric dehydrogenase, α-ketoglutarate oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and furfuryl alcohol dehydrogenase activity were observed in the salivary ducts which may be interpreted as significant of high metabolic activity.
The 11 β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in these ducts displayed marked substrate specificity utilizing 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione and cortisol but not 11 β-hydroxyoestrone or 11 β-hydroxyprogesterone. The relationship between corticosteroids and salivary electrolyte concentrations is discussed.
