Summary
The development of Chironomus thummi from the last larval molt until pupation is described. The general morphology, changes in length and weight of body, hemolymph color and growth of the wing-leg imaginal discs are documented. During the first half of the last larval instar a developmental dichotomy leads to larvae which a) are large, deep red in color and have small imaginal discs (type R) or b) are smaller, have a light red or pink color and tend to have larger imaginal discs (type B). Type R predominates during fall/winter in laboratory cultures and field catches, while type B typically appears during summer in laboratory cultures.
The changes in the salivary glands during this period are also described, including their morphology, nuclear volume, chromosome diameter and the puffing activity at 3 loci. Two puffs, which signal the onset of metamorphosis, appear later in the prepupa,l stage in type R than in type B, and attain a smaller size in type R.
It is suggested that the high variability of puffing pattern and general development reflects corresponding variabilities of the endocrine system, and that the system that eventually integrates the variability must operate at a level subsequent to transcription.
Typ B erscheint in Sommer-Laborkulturen.
