Construction of the vagina by means of an intestinal mucosa-muscularis graft

A new method in the treatment of aplasia or stricture of the vagina

Summary

The conventional methods in the treatment of aplasia vaginae—sigmoid transposition and the split skin inlay—are unfavourable in several respects.

On account of theoretical considerations and experience in four cases, a mucosamuscularis graft from the small bowel is recommended as lining for the vaginal dissection. The operation seems relatively minor, technically simple and does not seem to require a complicated and embarrassing after-treatment. The recommended method produces a vagina which has an almost normal appearance and functions well. The technique might readily be used in the treatment of vaginal strictures.
