Summary
The radiotherapy of Hodgkin's disease is based on the knowledge of the topography of development and spread of the disease, and on the therapeutic properties and methods of application of mega volt therapy:
-
1.
The clinical findings are: The disease begins in a localised area and spreads a) continually within the lymphatic system b) by local extralymphatic spread to neighbouring organs and c) by distant metastases. The spread occur according to known principles.
-
2.
The theraputical findings are: The specific Hodgkin tissue is destroyed by a dose of 4000–4500 R in a high percentage.
-
3.
Consequences for radiotherapy: The localised development of disease and its local progressive spread, make it possible to irradiate systematically with large continuous fields for the purpose of cure.
-
4.
Results of Therapy: The 5 year survival rate of the patient in the series 1964–1969 is 66% as opposed to 42% before 1964 (Statistical significance P<0.001), the 5 year disease-free survival rate is 36% as opposed to 19% before 1964 (Statistical significance P<0.05).
