Summary
Rats bearing Yoshida sarcomas showed decreased levels of liver manganese, which were correlated with liver catalase activity. Further studies were made to determine whether a similar simultaneous decrease of liver manganese and catalase also developed after i. p. application of tumour extracts. Mice receiving extracts from Yoshida sarcomas and control extracts from rat muscle and spleen in equal dosage were used as test animals. After 24 hours lowered concentrations of liver manganese were found, again showing a correlation with catalase activity.
The decrease of liver manganese and catalase values is related to the dose of the extracts given. However, in comparing activities of the test preparations, only small differences were observed. In particular, the experimental data clearly disprove that tumour extracts are considerably more effective than preparations from non-malignant tissues in depressing either liver manganese concentration or catalase activity.
The manganese-catalase correlation demonstrated by those experiments suggests that some structural or functional relationship exists between the manganese and the enzyme.
