Abstract
Several papers, mainly of a theoretical nature, have been published on the oscillatory flow in a Hartmann-Sprenger tube. Quantitative exploration of the flow field has proved difficult and details are lacking. In the present work, using the hydraulic analogy instantaneous water-depth patterns have been measured during stable oscillatory flow. These patterns compare favourably with the gross structural features revealed by shadow-photography (Iwamoto and Deckker, 1981). It has also been established that the existence of a low pressure (low water-depth) region near the entrance to the tube is a necessary condition for setting up stable oscillatory flow, analogous to Rayleigh's postulate for heat driven stable oscillations (Rayleigh 1878).
