Summary
-
1.
The different sensilla on the antenna of Lasius fuliginosus were investigated. According to the results with light-microscopy, 7 different types of sensilla could be distinguished: the sensilla chaetica, s. trichodea, s. trichodea curvata, s. basiconica, s. coeloconica, s. ampullacea, and the s. campaniformia. This is the first time that the s. trichodea and the s. campaniformia have been described for the antenna of ants.
-
2.
All these types of sensilla were also found in other species, also from other sub-families.
-
3.
For most of these types of sensilla the structure and innervation were determined. The olfactory sensilla trichodea curvata contain approximately 30 sensory cells. The s. basiconica and s. trichodea, which are probably olfactory, have approximately 10 and 3 sensory cells, respectively.
-
4.
The number and distribution of the different types of sensilla which could be distinguished by lightmicroscopy were determined for workers and males. For both workers and males the s. chaetica were most numerous. There were fewer s. trichodea curvata and even less s. trichodea and s. basiconica. There were very few s. campaniformia, s. coeloconica and s. ampullacea.

The function of these sensilla is discussed in connection with preliminary electrophysiological results.
