Summary
A new design of Propathene (I.C.I.) intramedullary bone peg is described suitable for arthrodesis of the joints of the fingers and the thumb. It is designed of similar material, shapes and sizes to the Calnan-Nicolle finger joint prosthesis, so that fitting is facilitated by the use of the same set of reamers. A combination of selected joint fusion and prosthetic replacement can be performed simultaneously in the same hand, and yet achieve free active movement after only 2 weeks of immobilisation. A preliminary report on 34 peg fusions in the past 3–14 months is presented.
