Summary

In a routine chromosome preparation 70–80% of chromosome sets are at the stage of metaphase. The number of coils per chromosome is constant. Karyotyping is possible on the basis of the number of primary coils. There are more primary coils in chromosomes at the stage of prophase and less in chromosomes in anaphase. The pitch is constant in all three stages of mitosis examined=0.55 μ (±0.15 μ).
