Isolation and analysis of conidiation defective mutants of Aspergillus niger

Summary

Mutants defective in sporulation were isolated following gamma-irradiation of a wild type strain of Aspergillus niger. A complementation study was undertaken by growing 12 such mutants in pairwise combinations, and it was shown that they belonged to six different complementation groups. Parental types were recovered from the spores resulting from a complementing pair of mutants indicating that heterokaryotic heads were formed. “Aconidial” parents could be recovered from heterokaryotic conidial heads occurring due to pairing of “aconidial” and “coloured” conidial mutants.
