Summary
The authors describe the phenomena which lead to calcification of heart and skeletal muscle in dihydrotachysterol-treated rats. In the skeletal muscle the onset of mineral deposition is in the dilated vesicles of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. In heart muscle, on the contrary, calcification begins in the mitochondrial crystal. The results show that these differences are related to the physiopathological mechanism of muscle contraction.
