Summary
The experimental model of a burn produced on rats is described, with the wound made in the wall of an air cell. The position of the wound in relation to the larger vessels is open to choice. Thermal injury is limited to the wall of the air cell, preventing proliferation into the wound area from below. The burn is studied on complete specimens, permitting evaluation of the whole wound area. The depth of burn is easily assessed, and it is possible to have standardized experimental groups.
Healing is described for a typical three-zone burn of this model.
