Fluorescence histochemical studies of adrenergic nerve fibres and serotonin containing mast cells of the knee joint synovial membrane in normal and experimental arthritic rats

Summary

Distribution of noradrenergic nerve fibres and serotonin containing mast cells in the normal and experimental arthritic synovial membrane of the rat knee joint has been demonstrated using the fluorescence histochemical method of Falck and associates [3]. Noradrenergic nerve fibres, usually associated with the arteries and arterioles, as well as mast cells were mainly found to be in the subsynovial layer close to the ligamentous layer. They are increased in the synovial membrane of rats with adjuvant arthritis.
