Summary
In order to investigate the role of chloride ions for the function of smooth and cardiac muscle, chloride ions of Tyrode-solution were replaced by the monovalent, non permeating and indifferent methylsulfate ions. The experiments were carried out with ileum of the guinea pig, the duodenum of the rabbit, the uterus of the rat, the spontaneously beating cardiac atrium of the guinea pig, and with the frog heart preparation of Straub. No organ showed any essential change of function when transferred into the chloride-free medium or when left in methyl sulfate-Tyrode solution for several hours. Cardiac muscle in chloride-free milieu unvariably reacted on positive or negative inotropic substances, whereas the reaction of smooth muscle usually was somewhat weaker. Thus, it appears as probable that chloride ions have no immediate importance for the function of smooth and cardiac muscle. This means that the tissues investigated behave differently as compared to skeletal muscle.
