Summary
In 4 specimens of Gymnarchus niloticus imported from Nigeria, 7 worms (5 of which where undamaged) were found which proved to belong to a new species of the cestodarian order Amphilinidea. A morphological description of the new species is given, the name Nesolecithus africanus is proposed.
Ecology as well as phylogeny of the Amphilinidea are discussed. Morphological correlations between these parasites and their hosts support the assumption of Joyeux and Baer that these worms, living in the coelom, expel their eggs into the open water after penetration of the abdominal wall of their hosts. In view of the phylogeny a new argument is contributed speaking for an archaic character of the order.
A key for the taxonomic classification of the families, subfamilies, and all species described belonging to the order Amphilinidea is given.
