Summary
Metabolic products of the growing metacercaria of Posthodiplostomum cuticola stimulate the surrounding tissue (cutis and musculature of fish) to produce pathologic quantities of intracellular melanin. The cells containing the melanin are, obviously, true melanophores with a high rate of reproduction. Whereas metabolism of the growing metacercaria is mainly anoxibiotic, oxidative processes take place in the adjacent tissue of the host.
