Summary
The embryophores of Polymorphus botulus were investigated by means of topochemical and polarisation-optical methods. The main constituents of the embryophores are the shell and the fibrous layer. The shell consists of chitin, a keratin-like and probably also another, neutral, elastinlike protein. Moreover, it contains polyphenols which are chiefly bound to the chitin of the shell. The fibrous layer consits of parallely oriented loops which are twisted in dexiotropic direction. The fibers consist of a keratinlike protein and are probably bound to each other by means of short chitin molecules, associated with polyphenols. The keratin-like protein of the embryophores originates from granules which are already present in the growing oocytes.
