Summary

During 1962 and 1963, 200 dogs selected at random from Karachi were examined for the presence of intestinal helminths. Results of the survey indicated that 99% of the dogs examined contained at least one species of helminth. Double or mixed infection was not uncommon. Of the total dogs, 67% had D. caninum, 7% E. granulosus, 23% T. hydatigena, 5.5% T. pisiformis, 0.5% T. multiceps, 1% T. serialis, 0.5% T. gaigeri were recorded. Among nematodes, Toxocara canis, A. caninum and Trichuris vulpis are represented in 45.4%, 44.4% and 0.5% respectively. Among flukes, 0.5% Opisthorchis caninus and 0.5% Paropisthorchis indicus of the total dogs were recorded.

The role of the dogs as reservoir-hosts of human helminths and their public health significance are briefly discussed.
