Summary
The female genital systems of the following species of the genus Polystomoides Ward (Monogenea) have been studied: P. malayi Rohde, P. asiaticus Rohde, P. siebenrockiellae Rohde and P. renschi Rohde. All species have an oocapt with “Schließzellen” (closing cells) in the terminal portion of the ovary, and a modified valve-like oviduct, in which the spermatozoa probably enter the oocytes. The oviduct opens into a cavitas communis, which usually contains a number of spermatozoa, thus serving as a seminal receptacle. The two vitello-vaginal ducts and the genito-intestinal duct also enter it. Each vagina opens through one vaginal pore to the outside. The common duct (ovovitelloduct) opens via a sphincter into the ootype. Glandular mucous cells open into the lumen of the sphincter. In P. malayi, the largest species, the serous part of Mehlis' gland consists, contrary to the findings in all other species of parasitic platyhelminths, of two components, i.e. a secretory ootype epithelium and a compact ootype gland, which is separated from the parenchyma by a sheath of connective tissue. P. asiaticus and P. renschi, and probably also P. siebenrockiellae (of which only immature specimens were examined) have only a secretory ootype epithelium. Because of the different structure of the “oogenotop” even in species belonging to one genus, it should be used with caution only for taxonomic studies. The ootype is followed by the uterus which opens to the outside, together with the male genital duct, through a common genital pore. Gland cells, which can be impregnated with silver, open into the common genital pore of P. malayi. The largest species, P. malayi, possesses also the most highly differentiated male genital system. — Data on the development of the oogenotop in P. malayi are given and the literature on the structure of the female genital system in Monogenea is discussed.
