Summary
The effect of cardiac glycosides (digitoxine 20.0 μg/kg, k-strophanthine 10.0 μg/kg i.v.) on reflex bradycardia has been investigated in 124 anesthetized cats. The bradycardia was induced by elevation of pressure in the perfused carotid sinus or by electrical stimulation of the sinus nerve or/and the afferent vagus nerve. The results were as follows:
-
1.
The reflex bradycardia was enhanced significantly after administration of digitoxine or strophanthine. The maximal effect was obtained within 40 min.
-
2.
After bilateral section of the vagus nerves or pharmacological blocking of the efferent vagus nerve by atropine the persisting bradycardia was not affected after administration of cardiac glycosides.
It is assumed that the site of action is localized at the efferent end of the parasympathetic innervation as the potentiation of the circulatory reflex selectively concerns the vagal component of the reflex bradycardia.
