A histochemical study on the influence of drugs on bovine adrenal medulla catecholamines

Summary

In calf adrenal medulla there are two cell types clearly distinct on cytological and cytochemical reasons and sharply topographically delimited. The outer cells are chromaffin, iodate-negative and do not fluoresce with formalin fixation; the inner ones are chromaffin, iodatepositive and brightly fluorescent after formalin fixation.

The positivity of the iodate reaction and the formalin induced fluorescence are largely dependent of the same cells in the inner part of the medulla and presumably of the same granular structures in the cells.

The methods employed are not adequate for quantitative determinations but allow to ascertain that after perfusion during several hours with Tyrode solution and certain drugs the content of catecholamines of the medullary cells is sufficient enough to be revealed with the histochemical techniques used.
