Abstract

Earlier research, on the photoreactivity of some organics with aqueous NO x extended to systems comprising codissolved chlorides. It is found that concentrations of NO3 bear a determining role on the transfer of Cl from the aqueous into the organic phase and that rates of this transfer also depend on Cl concentration as well as on the intensity of UV light. A simple overall mechanism is postulated for the process studied in the laboratory and the experimentation is thereafter extended to conditions of sunlight illumination where the reaction is found to occur along similar lines but with larger quantum yields.
