Summary
The acute, in vitro effect of T3 on refractory period and conduction velocity was investigated on the isolated guinea pig auricle. T3 shortened the refractory period slightly (5,2%). Reduction of the potassium concentration in the bath fluid or pre-treatment with ACh or DNP produced a more pronounced shortening of the refractory period. Under these conditions, fibrillation could be produced although these substances had been washed out completely before application of T3. The effect of T3 was not influenced by epinephrine. Conduction velocity was not altered by T3.
Diiodotyrosine, another organic iodine compound, had no effect on the refractory period or conduction velocity.
The results indicate that T3 produces an acute increase in the excitability of the guinea pig auricle.
