Summary

1. A preparation of the isolated stomach and vagus of the guinea-pig is described which reacts to direct and indirect electrical stimulation with consistent contractions during several hours.

2. Pharmacological investigations on this preparation had the following results:

  1. a)

ganglionic blocking drugs (hexamethonium, Pendiomid et al.) abolished the contractions produced by nicotine and vagal stimulation, whereas those produced by direct electrical stimulation, acetylcholine, histamine and barium remained intact.

  2. b)

Atropine abolished the effect of nicotine and vagal stimulation as well as the effect of direct electrical stimulation. However, this paralysing action appeared only after a considerably longer presence of atropine in the bath than was necessary to abolish acetylcholine contractions.

3. In the presence of atropine inhibitory effects were seen on direct electrical stimulation. They were somewhat reduced by ganglionic blocking drugs, but could be abolished by sympatholytic drugs.
