Summary
Male guinea-pigs, received daily injections of 100 mg/kg NaClO4 for 3 to 50 days. PTU-blocked thyroids and tracheal segments of these animals have a significantly elevated iodine accumulation after stopping the perchlorate treatment as compared with untreated controlls.
Whereas in the thyroid this effect appeared first after 3 days treatment, in the treachea there was needed at least 20 days of treatment with perchlorate to produce this effect. This difference and the possible mechanism of perchlorate action are subject of the discussion.
