Summary
Cu, Zn, Ni and Co which are able to form chelates with histamine are examined as to the influence they exercise upon the guinea pig ileum. The alterations of the cumulative dose-response curves of histamine has been chosen as a criterion and the results has been evaluated according to the method of Ariens and collaborators. It is evident that the metals occupy multiple receptors which, partially, are different from the receptors of histamine.
In a second series of experiments the reversibility of the action of metals is examined. The reversibility is good with Co and particulary with Ni, but is present with Cu and Zn in minor concentrations only.
Chelate formation of heavy metals with histamine is not evident with concentrations which are applicable only with the intestine, as the affinity of the histamine towards the receptors is particularly high.
