Summary
The influence of 3 day courses of various corticosteroids on the antidiuretic and saluretic activity of vasopressin (1, 10 or 100 mU per rat s. c.) in hydrated, normal, unanesthetized rats was investigated. The corticosteroids tested were Cortisone acetate (25 mg/kg · day s. c.), Cortexone acetate (20 mg/kg · day s. c.), Cortisol acetate (25 mg/kg · day s. c.) and d.l-Aldosterone acetate (0,5 mg/kg · day s. c.).
Pretreatment with Cortexone diminished, and pretreatment with Aldosterone slightly enhanced the antidiuretic activity of vasopressin. Cortisone or Cortisol had no detectable effect. The natriuretic effect of vasopressin was depressed by pretreatment with Cortisone or Cortisol, and increased by pretreatment with Cortexone. Pretreatment with Aldosterone depressed the natriuretic effect of 10 mU/rat vasopressin, but increased the natriuretic effect of 100 mU/rat vasopressin. The chloruretic and kaliuretic effects of vasopressin were influenced in approximately the same manner as the natriuretic effect. The conclusion is reached that the improvement of water diuresis by Cortisone or Cortisol in adrenalectomized animals cannot be ascribed to an antagonistic action of these steroids against endogenous vasopressin.
