Summary
The effect of LSD on the slow wave activity of the rabbit hippocampus and on hippocampal unit firing was studied. High doses of LSD (up to 0.1 mgm/kgm) abolish both the slow wave activity and the unit firing. In some experiments there was a clear correlation between EEG and unit activity under the influence of LSD: units were firing during periods of EEG regularization and were silent when the EEG was flat. Lower doses of LSD (about 10 to 25 μg/kgm) sometimes caused a deceleration of the pyramidal cell firing without influencing the hippocampus EEG.
The action of LSD described in this paper may be due to the proposed (Purpura) inhibitory action of this substance on axodendritic synapses. This action could account for the changes both of macro and micro-activity in the hippocampus.
