Summary
The refractory period of Aβ- and C-fibres of the saphenous nerve of the rabbit was investigated under experimentally induced pathological conditions. Lesions of the axon cause a slight reduction of the absolute refractory period, but practically no changes of the relative refractory time. In contrast, segmental demyelination is followed by significant changes of the relative refractory period even though demyelination may involve only a few millimeters of the axon. Theoretical and clinical aspects of these findings are discussed.
Zusammenfassung
