On the estimation of the number of undetected misprints and optimal release rules in proofreading

Abstract

A manuscript is proofread a number of times. After several proofreadings the number of undetected misprints in the manuscript is estimated using a simple linear program. The reader stops proofreading when the benefit from finding more misprints is surpassed by the cost of one extra reread.
