Summary

The activities of the Bundesforschungsanstalt für Naturschutz und Landschaftsökologie concerning vegetation succession are presented in a concise review. They have a wide scope and are of scientific as well as of technical interest. Studies are being carried out

• - in natural forest reserves to examine regeneration and competition;

• - on recently raised islands of the river Ahr to investigate the pionier plant cover and the spontaneous reproduction of riparian willows (Salix spp.);

• - on a clearing to get knowledge on stability of preforest vegetation and forest regeneration out of stumps and seeds;

• - on abandoned arable land to observe the changing aspects;

• - in a planted forest on ancient garden ground to investigate the invasion of woodland species;

• - in highway lawns to develop seed mixtured for grassy vegetation which needs little care;

• - on a man-made gravel plain to observe the spontaneous colonization and vegetation dynamics;

• - in meadows to analyse the effects of lowering the ground water table.
