Irrigation effect on the mineralization of river waters

Abstract

It is pointed out that salinity of the rivers of Central Asia (Syrdarya, Chirchik, Zeravshan and others) sharply increased (from 0.2 to 1.6 g 1−1) in the period from 1938 to 1972. This increase was connected with the washing out of large amounts of salts from irrigated lands. The salts are carried out to the rivers in the irrigation and sewage waters.

A certain quantitative relationship was established between the increment of the irrigated areas (F) and the increase of mineralization of the river waters (M), which can be used for prediction estimation.
